  • Tanzania

    Tanzania is a multi-ethnic country with numerous eHealth service initiatives. The country has an electronic and postal communications act and a universal communications access act but these have no specific eHealth provisions. Various health professional bodies also exist in the country.In 2015, it joined the EAC’s eHealth collaborative, leading on cancer services.

    Tanzania published its eHealth strategy in September 2013. In the same year, it started refining its anti cyber-crime legislation. It's AirStrip ONE mobile interoperability platform and the Sense4baby wireless feta, Smart Help app and maternal monitoring system. It has adopted OpenMRS for its EHRs.

    IBM has a Watson initiative in the country, and in 2015, GSMA said Tanzania's mHealth feasibility is good. It's mHealth services include MYpatient and SMSs as part of the Wired Mothers service. It has an mHealth project in 2015 with the Vodafone Foundation for sickle cell treatment adherence.

  • Uganda

    Uganda is a multi-ethnic country with numerous eHealth service initiatives. The country has a communications act, electronic transactions act, electronic signatures act and a computer misuse act. Numerous health professional associations exist in the country. A national eHealth strategy and policy are currently being finalized. In 2015, it joined the EAC’s eHealth collaborative, leading on cardiac services.

    An mHealth embargo was implemented to allow time to rationalise mHealth development.

    eHealth initiatives include K-Free, an app dealing with breast cancer, MTambula for locating services, mTrac for disease monitoring, numerous mHealth projects and OpenMRS for EHRs.

    The Zambian government has stated an intention to employ a ‘robust eHealth system’ to achieve the MDGs before 2015. 

    The WHO Country Accountability Framework Assessment 2012 says that policy, services, governance, and protection all need some enhancement. In 2015, GSMA's cointry feasibility report said that Zambia has good mHealth potential.

    Zimbabwe is a multi-ethnic country with one of the lowest GDP per capita PPP in Africa. Various eHealth service initiatives exist in the country. It has a postal and telecommunications services act as well as an access to information and protection of privacy act. Various health professional bodies exist.

    Its eHealth initiatives include Dial-a-Doctor, expanding desktop, Internet, WiFi and mHealth capacity in hospitals as part of its EHR strategy. OpenHIE and OpenLMIS initiatives are also in Zimbabwe.
